What is the Chat?
Chat is an application allowing you to chat with messages, video and audio with users who are online and have chat enabled.
It's available free to all PlentyOfFish users, and it's really easy to use.

To chat with someone, just click 'Chat' underneath the thumbnail image of the user you wish to chat with. This sends them a chat request. Chat gives you the option to communicate with messages, but also with video and audio if you have a webcam or microphone.

Please disable any pop-up blockers as they may prevent the chat window from opening successfully.

What does “Your chat request has timed out” mean?
If you see "Your chat request has timed out", it's because the user has neither accepted nor declined your chat request. The user may not have received your chat request for a few reasons, including:
1. The user is away from his/her computer.
2. The user is away from POF.com. 3. The user is accessing POF.com from a mobile phone and therefore did not receive your chat request.

Take this opportunity to request a chat with someone new!

Where do I find users to chat with?
To see a selection of users who are currently online, click ‘Online’ on the top banner. The Online page shows users who are currently logged in to PlentyOfFish.

How do I allow or not allow users to chat with me?
To ensure you appear available to chat go to 'Edit Profile', then select 'Mail Settings'. Ensure the drop down 'Allow users to initiate chat with me' is set to ‘Yes’.
If you do not want users to initiate chat with you, select ‘No’. This will still allow you to initiate chat with other users. To learn more about how to change your mail settings, click Here.

In addition, if your profile is hidden, other users will not see you as available to chat. To unhide your profile, go to 'Edit Profile'. To learn more about how to hide or unhide your profile, click Here.

What are the chat's special features?
Our chat allows you to add a user as a favorite, send them emoticons, and even send them a message.
You also have the option to video or audio chat with a user.

How do I audio or video chat?
To enable video or audio chat, click 'Chat' underneath the thumbnail image of the user you wish to chat with. Once your chat request is accepted, click on the ‘Video’ or ‘Audio’ button in the top right hand corner of the chat window. A new private window will pop up. Click ‘Allow’ to enable your camera or earphones.

If you'd like to video chat with a user, you will need to connect a webcam or have a webcam built into your computer in order for the user you’re chatting with to see you.
At least one user in the chat must have a webcam in order to initiate a video chat.
If you’d like to audio chat with a user you will need earphones and a microphone to be able to communicate back and forth.

You must download Adobe Flash player version 10.1 or higher to use video or audio chat. If Flash player isn't installed on your computer, you will receive a notification to download this application when you initiate a video or audio chat. After you have installed Adobe Flash Player, you may have to restart your computer.

How do I block someone I’m chatting with?
When a user initiates a chat with you, you can select his profile in the chat window and click ‘Block’. This user will not be able to message you at any time and all previous messages from this user will be deleted from your inbox. To learn more about blocking a user, click Here.

We take the security of our users seriously. If a user is interfering with your experience on PlentyOfFish, we encourage you to report them by clicking ‘Report Profile’ at the bottom of their profile.

What should I do if my camera is not working?

What can I do if my camera is not working?

If you are having trouble getting your camera or webcam to work, please try the following:
1. Unplug and re-plug your camera
2. Please disable any pop-up blockers as they may prevent the chat window from opening successfully.
3. Please ensure you have Adobe Flash Player installed. If you do not have it installed, when you open up your chat window it will direct you to the Adobe website where you can download it for free. After you have installed Adobe Flash Player, you may have to restart your computer.
4. Try using a different internet browser.
5. Re-start your computer.

Is chat available on mobile phones?
Sorry, you cannot currently use the chat feature if you are on a mobile phone. Mobile users will still appear as "Online", but they will be unable to receive your chat requests.


We do plan to add the chat feature to our mobile apps for Android and iPhone in the future. This will be available in a later version of the apps. Stay tuned!
